TOGETHER WE BUILD STRENGTH

The Overseas Vietnamese Chinese Earthquake Relief Committee was formed immediately after the 5.12 quake in Sichuan, China.  This committee is a representation of well over a dozen organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. 
Shortly after the committee was formed and members were notified of the urgency of the fund raising, we received well over $10,000 in a matter of 48 hours. 
On June 14, 2008, a fund raising event is scheduled at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda.   As we learned of the real needs of the victims, we are changing our course and encourage donors to donate tents and sleeping bags besides cash.  We are also planning on delivering all the money and supplies collected directly to the victims in China.  Please continue to work hard and dig deeper into your pockets to help toward this cause.

During this time of mourning and grieving, your selflessness has touched the hearts of thousands and your contribution will no doubt bring hope to the quake victims. We sincerely thank each and everyone of you for your generous donation.

Our course of fund raising has been somewhat modified as of May 22nd.  As we learned that the money donated will not reach the victims in a long time since it requires the local government to sort things out and then determine what/when/how to spend/distribute the money. 
Thus the quickest way to help is to provide goods that they most needed. 
As of today, we have secured 500 new tents and 2000 new sleeping bags through a local sports store.  As the store's tent/sleeping bag inventory becomes available, we will continue to purchase more.   We also have found United Airlines to sponsor with delivering these goods to China.  We are encouraging donors to each purchase a tent or a sleeping bag to help with one victim family.  Each tent will only cost them $60 and a sleeping bag is $25.  We are also offering the tent/sleeping bag donors to write a short message or plain autograph on the tent/sleepingbag itself, so that the recipient in China will know a bit more about the source of the gift(s).  You are invited to partake in sponsoring tents and/or sleeping bags for as few or as many families as reasonable.  
We are also selling t-shirts for $10 each as a part of the fund raising.
